What exactly is an Event anyway?

Oxford dictionary defines an Event as a thing that happens,
especially one of importance.

Everyone at some point will be part of an event. Whether it is a birthday party, a wedding, a work event, or community event. You may be a host or participant, but for sure you will be involved in some way.

All events have some things in common.

  • Why - The reason the event is happening
  • How - The cost and the plan to make the event happen
  • Who - The guests that will attend the event
  • Where - The venue where the event is being held

Let’s take a little bit of a deeper look at each of those questions.

Let’s start with the Why.

Why have an event?  The reason starts with an idea! An idea of why we need to bring people together.

  • Are we celebrating something or someone like a birthday, a graduation, a wedding, a retirement, a celebration of life?
  • Are we having a community event.
  • Are we doing a fundraiser for a not-for-profit?
  • Are we launching a new business, a new product, a new season?
  • Are we thanking or rewarding our staff?
  • Are we having a seasonal party? A Christmas or holiday party? A summer get together?

Between January 1 and December 31 there are so many reasons to get together!

Whatever the reason someone somewhere has an idea for an event.

But how do they make it a reality?

   Let’s explore the how's

  • How much will this cost?
  • How much do I have to spend?
  • How will I plan this event?
  • How long do I have to make it happen?
  • Do I need help to make this happen?

Who do we want to attend this event?

For example, if we are celebrating a one year old's birthday, the guest list would look a lot different than a 16 or 60 year old's birthday party guest list.

  • What size guest list will we have?
  • If we are fundraising, how many people do we want to reach?
  • Who exactly is our audience?

Finally… where are we going to have this event?

  • Will it be a home party?
  • Will it be a community event?
  • Will it be an indoor or outdoor event?
  • If we use a venue that is not our house, what is included?
  • How much will it cost, for how long and what is included?

Phew… that was a whole lot of questions. Let’s circle back to the beginning. The idea. The idea is the starting point and all the answers will be based on the idea
